Atlas(t): Cartography of the Human Form through Bibliomancy

A note on the text: I produced the following images while referencing the medical textbook, Frank H. Netter’s Atlas of Human Anatomy. The divinatory practice of bibliomancy (where chance and intuition are used to select text or images from a book) was used to find random instances of the body throughout the textbook, wherein the context of the body is on the page. This project is an exploration of form, the chance of form, and the spiritual acceptance of the human body. If form is an extension, a gift, an obstruction, and an amplification of meaning, how has the corporeal consciousness amplified and changed personhood?Of course, it was totally impossible to divorce from form. Impossible to leave the body of the work of the body. I’d expected a truth, a whole encapsulation of experience. Somehow abandoning the body would allow greater access into consciousness. It was not a farce, nor was it a truth. Nor was the experience impossible without the body. The unfortunate fact of the matter was that my own personhood was tied to a body. With its death, I too would die. I was the body, was tied to the body, and wasn’t the body.
