Assessment of lead contamination in Kohl available on the algerian market

The aim of this study is to assess the lead concentration in kohl sold in various regions of Algeria, due to its widespread use, which represents a potential source of lead exposure, particularly concerning for newborns and children who are more vulnerable to its toxic effects. Given that there is no standard composition for this traditional cosmetic, which is typically based on stibnite and galena, we analyzed 15 kohl samples with varying textures and origins using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (FAAS). The results revealed the presence of lead in all samples, with concentrations ranging from 1.25 to 326 mg/kg. This variation raises concerns regarding the compliance of these products with current regulatory standards. In conclusion, none of the analyzed samples meet the legal standards for lead content, highlighting the need to reassess the health risks associated with the use of this traditional product.
