Efficacy of combination therapy with Donepezil and Memantine in Alzheimer and mixed dementia: A comparative study

This study investigates the efficacy of combination therapy with donepezil and memantine in patients with Alzheimer's disease and mixed dementia. A comparative analysis was conducted on two groups of patients: one receiving the combination therapy and the other receiving monotherapy with donepezil. The visits followed at 6-week intervals, each patient's follow-up period being 24 weeks. Research has revealed from a cognitive point of view the combined therapy (donepezil and memantine) does not present important benefits, but in terms of behavioural disorders there are advantages. This result once again argues for the assessment that although these drugs are now the most effective pharmacological therapies for AD, their overall impact is quite modest, and they do not change the progression of the underlying neurodegenerative process.
