Realism Vs. Modernism Vs. Influenza
Abstract: This essay challenges the opposition of realism vs. modernism in the history of the novel, showing how this binary has helped to license neglect of the influenza pandemic of 1918–20. It demonstrates in particular how the flu troubles the realist aesthetics of Willa Cather's One of Ours (1918).
