Grid Interconnection Solutions and Power Quality Enhancement for a Battery Supported Hybrid PV System
The energy demand is increasing unprecedentedly day by day due to rapid development of technology. In order to meet environmental expectations, it is necessary to give more place to cleaner and renewable energy sources than others. Solar energy is one of the most important type of these resources. This paper aims to design a grid-connected hybrid system consisting of a 12.45 kW Photovoltaic (PV) system and a 10 kWh capacity Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). In design procedure, Perturb Observe (P&O), Incremental Conductance (INC), Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Hybrid Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithms are implemented and tested. The most efficient method is selected among the applied algorithms and the is developed to ensure power continuity. Since the powers of PV and BESS are different from each other, it is determined that Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) increases when the system is in night mode. To solve this issue and enhance power quality, a single mode LCL filter is performed. Then, two-mode LCL filter is deployed. Thus the THD value is decreased from 4.8% to %3.2. Additionally, with ANN-MPPT, 97.5% system efficiency is observed even at low irradiance.
