Devemos Falar sobre o Nojo: Uma Revisão Narrativa
Disgust is an emotion whose non-pathological functioning is well-established. However, it is associated with various psychological disorders, especially anxiety disorders and eating disorders. Yet, it remains he least studied basic emotion. We sought to contextualize the concept, expression, and treatment of disgust, thereby establishing it as an emotion of evolutionary and clinical importance. We conducted a narrative review on the concept and expression of disgust, as well as its applications. The terms “nojo” and “disgust” were searched in national and international scientifi c databases. Further searches in databases and references were conducted according to specifi c objectives. Disgust is an emotion distinguished by its disease prevention and contamination avoidance functions, further expanded by its social function of moral disgust and its intrapersonal function of self-disgust. Conversely, heightened sensitivity and propensity to disgust are associated with mental disorders. However, treatments for disgust have proven controversial. Given the importance of disgust and its prevalence across numerous contexts, addressing disgust and its interfaces in psychology is crucial. Keywords:Disgust, narrative review, disgust component, moral disgust, self-disgust
