Recent advances of oral fluids-based point-of-care testing platforms for oral disease diagnosis

Oral disease requires rapid and accurate diagnosis methods to adapt to the short turnround time in oral clinics. In recent years, point-of-care testing (POCT) platforms have gained increasing attention, due to their low-cost, ease of use, and rapidness. Oral fluids, the primary specimens for POCT, are rich in biomolecules and typically include saliva, oral rinse, gingival crevicular fluid (GCF), and peri-implant crevicular fluid (PICF). Thus, the non-invasive oral fluid-based POCT is considered the most promising chair-side diagnosis tool for oral diseases. This review focuses on recent advances in oral fluid-based POCT platforms. First, we summarize the commonly used oral fluids and their collection methods. Then, we present an overview of recent applications of POCT in oral diseases diagnosis. Finally, we discuss the current challenges and future developments of oral fluid-based POCT platforms for oral disease diagnosis. Oral disease diagnosis needs non-invasive, rapid, accurate methods for clinics. Point-of-care testing (POCT) platforms, due to its low-cost, ease of use and rapidness, are increasingly popular. Oral fluids like saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) make non-invasive POCT promising. This review covers advances in oral fluid-based POCT, summarizing common fluids, collection methods, applications in diagnosis, and future challenges. • Point-of-care testing (POCT) platforms are gaining widespread popularity due to their affordability, simplicity, and speed. • Oral fluids, abundant in biomarkers, serve as essential samples for POCT platforms in diagnosing oral diseases. • Although oral fluids-based POCT platforms hold great promise, several challenges remain to be addressed.
