Objective: to assess the operational efficiency of the health insurance fund of each province on the basis of the panel data of 31 provincial provinces across the country from 2012 to 2021. Methods: in this paper, data envelopment analysis of (autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government) health insurance fund operation is carried out, and the static operational efficiency of the health insurance fund of the 31 provincial administrative units across the country in the year 2019∼2021 is measured by the data envelopment analysis, results: the static operational efficiency is shown, and it is found that there is no significant improvement in the comprehensive efficiency, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency, and at the same time, the Malmquist model to analyze the changes in the dynamic efficiency of the health insurance fund from 2012 to 2021. It is found that there is a slight increase in the value of technical progress, and there is a certain increase in pure technical efficiency and total factor productivity. Conclusion: The operational efficiency of China's health insurance fund continues to grow more slowly, regionality is still obvious, and local governments should integrate resources to strengthen the level of operation and management of the health insurance fund.
