The Ethics of Malicious Speech in Buddhist Thought: A Comprehensive Analysis of Pisunavācā and Sammā Vācā

This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of malicious speech (pisunavc) within the framework of Buddhist ethics, specifically about the concept of right speech (Samm Vc) as outlined in the Pli Canon.Through an in-depth analysis of primary literary sources, including the Sleyyaka Sutta (MN 41) and the Abhaya Sutta (MN 58), as well as interpretations from modern scholarly literature, this research identifies various forms of harmful verbal expressions and their ethical implications within Buddhism. The investigation centres on the four aspects of ethical verbal conduct emphasized in the Noble Eightfold Path: refraining from improper words, harmful speech, offensive language, and communication that lacks constructive purpose.By examining the psychological, social, and karmic repercussions of gossip and other toxic speech patterns, this study sheds light on the liberating dimensions of time (kla) and intention (cetan) in genuine, beneficial communication as taught by the Buddha.Furthermore, this research integrates elements of Buddhist ethics with contemporary mindfulness practices to propose the application of these principles in today's world, with particular emphasis on interpersonal and virtual communication.By combining insights from psychology and sociology with the foundational teachings of Buddhism, the study advances the field of applied Buddhist ethics. It highlights the relevance of the Right speech in addressing modern challenges such as conflict resolution, ethical communication, and the restoration of harmonious social relationships in an increasingly interconnected society. The findings of this research underscore the enduring significance of Buddhist speech ethics as a guide for ethical discourse in the modern era.It aims to bridge the traditional wisdom of ethical speech with the complexities of contemporary communication, offering practical guidance for fostering mindful, constructive, and compassionate interactions in today's globalized and digitalized world.
