Abstract

The basis of the regular army of the Safavid state was actually laid with the participation of the Qizilbash tribes who fought irregularly during the reign of Shah I Ismail. Safavid rulers Shah I Tahmasb and Shah I Abbas paid special attention to army building. It was during those times that the problem of building an army played a special role in the domestic and foreign policy of the Safavid shahs: Thus, parts of the army formed the core of the state. It should be stated that during the period from Shah Ismail to Shah I Abbas, the evolution process of the Safavid army did not develop in a stable, rising line, the number and composition of the army was variable. There are enough sources reflecting this historical reality. When Shah I Abbas came to the throne, he carried out a number of reforms to strengthen his power. One of the first steps he took was to abolish the old system in the army and establish new rules. As a result of the reforms carried out by Shah I Abbas, new types of troops were created, the army was equipped with firearms, including cannon. Along with this, new military titles and positions were created. However, in spite of all this, it can be said with full certainty that the main force in the army was still ethnically gizilbash and it continued to be so during their whole life. During the reign of Shah I Abbas the gizilbash knew very well that there were other army units that would defend them with firearms in these battles.
