A New Hypothesis on the Geographical Setting of Aeschylus’ Psychagogoi
The article offers a new hypothesis about the geographical setting of Aeschylus’ Psychagogoi and proposes to identify the λίμνη mentioned in the extant fragments with the Μαιῶτις λίμνη, in the Cimmerian Bosporus. Recent studies suggest that the name of this region is due to its association with the netherworld and, subsequently, with the Cimmerians mentioned in the Homeric nekyia. The analysis of a passage of the Prometheus Bound provides evidence in favor of this interpretation and reveals that the region around the Μαιῶτις λίμνη could have evoked that episode of the Odyssey to a fifth-century playwright.
