Stability Assessment of Utility Grids with Integration of Large Decentralized Variable Renewable Energy Sources- A Case Study
The recent surge in electricity demand has been accompanied by a substantial increase in the grid integration of large decentralized variable renewable energy resources. This influx, while promising for sustainable energy, poses challenges such as reduced inertia, diminished short circuit contributions, and heightened stability issues. This paper highlights the intricate interaction between solar inverters and the network utilities, aiming to propose mitigation methods that enhance the stability of future power systems. The study covers both steady state and dynamic conditions, considering different inverter modes of operation, such as voltage control, reactive power control, and power factor control. The conditions have been simulated comprehensively, modeling all specified parameters at both the inverter and plant levels. Dynamic models have been finetuned to ensure compliance with grid code requirements at the plant level. However, the final updated model must undergo validation using site-specific measurements, integrating actual field data into the final assessment.
