Participation of Energy Storage Systems in the Active Power Balance for the Bulgarian Power System

The increased penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in the Bulgarian Power System (BPS) has dictated, the need for installing Energy Storage Systems (ESS) to counter the power fluctuations due to their intermittent nature and optimize their cost effectiveness. Further, the grid code requirements need to be complied with, in such a manner as to provide both rehabilitation capabilities to the power system and increased productivity for the outfitted power plant. This article presents an overview of scientific publications that include Energy Storage Systems (ESS), with a focus on possibilities for frequency regulation (FR) and Active Power Balance (APB) modulation when coupled with Renewable Energy Sources (RES). The purpose of this review is to provide the reader with a categorized technological presentation of the latest academic researches and their sources, concerning the various ESS, their integration and best practices, which are then to be addressed in regard of the Bulgarian Power System (BPS) and its existing infrastructure.
