Circular Carbon Economy of CCUS Application in Thailand's Industries
Currently, several <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\text{CO}_{2}$</tex> utilization technologies are in the laboratory, prototype, and pilot phases, but some have been fully commercialized. Therefore, this study aims at investigation of the opportunity of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technologies deployed in Thai industries in term of long-life carbon utilization products. In this paper, based on high technology readiness level as in the commercial stage, products that have the potential to deploy CCUS technology in a circular carbon economy, especially for utilization in the form of permanent storage in products and having the potential to utilize carbon dioxide in the production of products to support Thailand's net zero greenhouse gas emissions targets consisting of methanol, polyurethane and polycarbonate. Results of the assessment of the potential from the production volume and carbon used in the production of the three types of primary products, indicate that “the use of CCUS technology in the industries producing all three types of primary products have a potential to reduce greenhouse gases in the chemical industry by 1.22 <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\text{MtCO}_{2}$</tex> in 2022”. Nevertheless, even if the technology is currently in the commercial stage, its cost is still high. The incentives mechanisms are needed to motivate manufacturers to adopt CCUS technology. Therefore, Thailand can achieve carbon neutrality target by 2050.
