Technical and Economic Advantages of Energy Storage Systems and their Applicability in Bulgaria
This paper discusses different ways of storing electricity obtained from renewable energy sources. In view of the intermittent amount of energy harvested, its storage is essential for use and when needed. The advantages and disadvantages of different energy storage systems are evaluated. Energy storage systems (ESS) play a critical role in modern energy management by enhancing the reliability, efficiency, and sustainability of power grids. This paper explores the technical and economic advantages of energy storage systems, emphasizing their capacity to address intermittent energy production from renewable sources, optimize energy consumption, and support grid stability. The study examines various types of energy storage technologies, including battery storage, pumped hydro storage, and thermal storage, highlighting their performance, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. Additionally, the applicability of these systems in Bulgaria is discussed, considering the country's energy mix, renewable energy potential, and evolving energy policy. It is concluded that energy storage presents a promising solution to the challenges faced by the Bulgarian energy sector, offering both economic benefits, such as reduced operational costs and improved energy security, and environmental advantages, including enhanced integration of renewable energy sources. The paper suggests potential strategies for the implementation of energy storage systems in Bulgaria and outlines the regulatory and market conditions necessary for their successful adoption.
