An Experimental Study on the Power Conditioning in an Electrical Network
Achieving high quality of electrical energy, and hence reducing losses, is an important task in modern power systems. Active filters are generally used to compensate for current and voltage harmonics, but in many cases they also have other functions such as reactive power compensation, current and voltage balancing, zero-sequence current compensation, flicker removal, and voltage regulation. In this paper, the performance of an active filter with extended capabilities is experimentally investigated. The instantaneous values of the voltages and currents are measured and with the help of modern power theory the quality indicators of the electrical energy are determined. In addition, the power quality indicators are determined by an independent analyzer. In this way, the indicators are determined according to two different power theories. This report, in addition to experimentally investigating power quality, also compares power quality metrics calculated under two different power theories.
