Building Energy Performance Benchmarking: Current Methods, Applications, and Implications for the Philippines

This paper reviews the current methods used in building energy performance benchmarking (BEPB), focusing on statistical models, physical models, machine learning, and hybrid approaches. It synthesizes findings from 45 studies, identifying the common variables such as gross floor area, occupancy, and electricity consumption used to benchmark energy performance across various building types, including residential, schools, and offices. The paper discusses the potential applicability of these methods in the Philippine context, emphasizing the need for region-specific benchmarks and improved data collection infrastructure. The study concludes that hybrid approaches, which combine statistical and machine learning methods, hold the greatest potential for enhancing energy efficiency in the Philippines, given that challenges related to data availability and technical expertise are addressed.
