Harnessing low-temperature geothermal resources in the state of Jalisco, Mexico
Despite Jalisco's rich geothermal resources, its low-temperature energy has primarily been used in recreational facilities like spas. However, the state offers significant potential for a broader range of applications, including space heating, industrial processes, and agriculture. While the Federal Electricity Commission has focused on high-temperature reservoirs for electricity generation, the potential of low-temperature geothermal energy has been largely overlooked. Although the private sector has begun exploring this resource, its involvement remains limited. Jalisco possesses substantial reserves of both high and low-temperature geothermal energy. Harnessing this energy can contribute to reducing fossil fuel dependency, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and fostering sustainable development. Its utilization can yield economic, social, and environmental benefits, such as job creation, reduced energy costs, and climate change mitigation.
