Arthropods associated with two species of native shrubs in Playa Magagna, Chubut

Playa Magagna is a protected area located near the city of Rawson (Chubut), where urban development is increasing. Therefore, it is essential to develop strategies for the sustainable use of its natural resources. The aim of this study was to investigate the biodiversity of the area, focusing on arthropods associated with two native shrubs: Atriplex lampa (“zampa”) and Chuquiraga erinacea ssp. hystrix (“uña de gato”). The beating method was used to collect arthropods from five shrubs of each species at six sampling sites (n= 60). Additionally, architectural variables and the richness of associated plants were measured for each shrub. Variation in arthropod assemblages between the shrub species and their relationship with plant variables were analyzed. Arthropod abundance was higher in A. lampa, while the richness and diversity of families were similar in both shrub species. The assemblages were well differentiated, and their structuring was mainly explained by the canopy volume. This information enhances the understanding of regional biodiversity and will contribute to the development of a management and conservation program for Playa Magagna.
