Francophone African Literature and the Question of Interlocking Identities: An Intersectional Approach to Literary Analysis

ABSTRACT: This study examines Driss Chraïbi’s La Civilisation, ma Mère!… (1972) and Mariama Bâ’s Une si longue lettre (1979), offering a comprehensive intersectional analysis of women’s subjectivity within the societal frameworks of Francophone African novels. It delves into the system of intersecting identities that underlie women’s subjugation across diverse cultural contexts. While conventional feminist analyses focus on patriarchy to understand men’s dominance, this perspective may inadequately capture women’s experiences within patriarchal structures. The article advocates for an intersectional approach alongside patriarchal analyses to understand women’s subjugation and seeks to establish intersectionality as a crucial and indispensable analytical framework for exploring feminist novels. Abstract: Cette étude examine La Civilisation, ma Mère!…
