Zoning of the Central Russian by the efficiency of green roofs in reducing excessive storm runoff

Due to the increased attention of the public and the government of the Russian Federation to environmental issues and their solution using modern tools and techniques, this paper discusses the effectiveness of using «green» roofs as a sustainable means of combating the problems of organizing and diverting the volume of storm drains in Russian cities. The possibility of such a study is explained by the fact that the design of green roofs consists of several layers, almost each of which is able to retain water, thereby reducing the total volume of rainwater runoff, which, in turn, would reduce the load on the sewer system and improve the environmental well-being of the urban environment. First of all, in order to predict the feasibility of installing green roofs in different cities of our country, the authors provide a description of the calculation model of such a greened roof. The authors chose the most easily erected and low-maintenance type of landscaping that meets all standards for the construction of green roofs, and also laid the most affordable materials. In the article, a methodology was developed to determine the volume of water accumulation by a green roof with specified parameters. The results of the calculations were correlated with the indicators of precipitation in different regions of the Russian Federation. As a result, a list of territories was formed in which the use of green roofs (including at peak precipitation values) would be most effective, and a map of the distribution of the optimal thickness of the substrate layer for the studied region was developed and reflected.
