Additional Losses in the Winding Under Higher Frequency Current

This paper explores the additional losses in electrical machine windings, focusing on high-frequency operations. These losses arise from the skin effect, proximity effect, and circulating currents within the winding conductors. The selected loss-suppressing methods are demonstrated using a stator stack for a small permanent magnet synchronous motor with a fractional-slot concentrated winding. Selected winding configurations are manually wound and the measurements are compared with the finite element method. Core losses are measured independently.

Abstract

This paper explores the additional losses in electrical machine windings, focusing on high-frequency operations. These losses arise from the skin effect, proximity effect, and circulating currents within the winding conductors. The selected loss-suppressing methods are demonstrated using a stator stack for a small permanent magnet synchronous motor with a fractional-slot concentrated winding. Selected winding configurations are manually wound and the measurements are compared with the finite element method. Core losses are measured independently.
