Modified Matching Control with Enhanced Frequency Support Capability

Grid-forming (GFM) control is emerging due to the increasing penetration of inverter-based resources (IBRs). Matching control, as a promising GFM control strategy for IBRs, balances the energy between the source and grid to make the power system operate in harmony. However, converters using conventional matching control may exhibit a poor frequency performance due to the inappropriate selection of the control coefficient. To address this issue, an improved frequency control strategy is proposed in this paper to enhance the frequency support capability of the matching control. Simulations and hardware-in-loop (HIL) experimental tests based on an IEEE 9-bus test system have verified the efficacy of the proposed method, and the results show that the matching-controlled converter with the proposed solution outperforms over the conventional one in terms of over-frequency and under-frequency support.
