Optimization of the Aluminium Waste Sorting Process by Using Simulation Models

The article focuses on the optimization of sorting processes through the creation of simulation models. The research was conducted in a company involved in the processing of aluminium waste, specifically on the aluminium scrap sorting line. After an initial analysis and collection of real data, a simulation model was created, representing all the equipment and processes of the analysed sorting line. The simulation model was developed using Siemens Tecnomatix Plant Simulation software. To better illustrate the sorting processes, a graph was created to present the efficiency of the line's equipment. In the next step, a simple adjustment to the operation mode of the first screw conveyor was proposed within the simulation model of the original line, with the expectation of increasing the overall performance of the line. The evaluation of the results from the simulation run of the improved model showed a 40% increase in production volume. The research conducted through the creation of simulation models and experimentation represents one of the approaches to digitalizing manufacturing processes in the context of Industry 4.0. Further research will involve the creation of a digital twin of the analysed line, which will establish a real-time information connection between the actual equipment-components of the line-and its simulation model, with the aim of monitoring and subsequently managing the sorting processes.
