A theory on the correlation between creative characteristics of art and ‘autism symptoms’
This study aims to explore the implications of the creative psychological characteristics associated with autistic symptoms and artistic activities, attempting to elucidate the similarities between
them. The research is preliminary in nature, analyzing the characteristics of paranoia, which is commonly observed in autism, under the premise that these features are analogous to the creative psychological traits found in art. This premise is based on the idea that terms frequently used in East Asia to describe creative personalities such as ‘Peculiarities(癖),’ ‘Obsession(癡),’ and ‘Madness(狂)’ can be interpreted as bearing similar characteristics to the symptoms of paranoia within the autism spectrum. Notably, the term ‘Peculiarities(癖)’ is sometimes employed to describe a genius-like quality. Therefore, this study seeks to infer the conceptual intersection between genius and imagination, which is emphasized in the psychology of art, by conducting a comparative analysis of the characteristics of paranoia within autistic symptoms and the creative inclinations reflected in the East Asian concept of ‘Peculiarities(癖).’
In this process, to extract a comprehensive understanding of autistic symptoms, the discussion is divided into pathological autism and psychological autism. This division allows for a comparative examination of the artistic genius identified within the concept of ‘Peculiarities(癖).’ Furthermore, to achieve a rational argument, the study reviews existing research on the autism spectrum and investigates the attributes of ‘Peculiarities (癖)’ perceived as contributing to creative artistic psychology, corroborating these findings through various case studies. The researcher believes that if this discussion and comparative analysis reach a reasonable level of coherence, it could expand the scope of understanding in the psychology of art.
