Increasing the stability of superhydrophobic octadecylphosphonic acid layers in aqueous chloride solutions

Superhydrophobic (SHP) coatings are an effective method of metals and alloys protection from atmospheric corrosion. However, the low stability of SHP layers in aqueous solutions often limits their practical application, which can be significantly improved by adding some corrosion inhibitors (CIs) to a corrosive medium. This article deals with a combined method of aluminum alloys (D16, AMg3 and AD31) protection from corrosion in aqueous solutions of sodium chloride (0.05 and 0.5 M). The method consists in increasing the stability and preservation of SHP properties of octadecylphosphonic acid (ODPA) coatings and the introducing CIs into the corrosive medium. The influence of inorganic (aluminum chloride, salts of rare-earth metals (Ce and Y)) and organic (sodium oleate, ascorbic acid) additives on the ability to increase the SHP stability of ODPA layers in aqueous chloride solutions has been studied. The mutual influence of SHP coatings and CIs in the protection of aluminum alloys has been studied using electrochemical measurements and corrosion tests. The protective effect has been calculated.
