Evaluation of the anticorrosive properties of polymer organosilicon coatings on copper surfaces: effect of formation conditions

The properties of polymer organosilicon surface nanolayers formed on copper upon modification of the metal surface with a solution of a mixture of vinyl- and amino-containing organosilanes were studied. The anticorrosive effect of surface layers obtained after various modification times in corrosive environments, namely, in chloride-containing electrolytes and in the atmosphere, was examined in detail. It was found that the maximum protective effect is observed after modification for 10 minutes when uniform, most dense, and cross-linked polymer layers are formed, which hinder the adsorption of chloride ions and other corrosive agents on the metal surface. They prevent the interaction of corrosive agents with the surface copper atoms (by reducing the rate of corrosion reactions) and, as a result, inhibit the corrosion and local anodic dissolution of the metal. Increasing the modification time to 20 minutes did not lead to an enhancement of the inhibitory efficiency.
