Coming full circle—2nd edition
In my very first JACCP editorial,1 I recounted some of the history of the first official ACCP journal, Pharmacotherapy, and hinted at what I wanted the second one to become. I think I said something like: “JACCP will be all things clinical pharmacy” as a sort of motto. I and others in ACCP leadership felt our discipline had matured enough to support a journal that was dedicated solely to clinical pharmacy. It was not to be a journal that included papers concerning clinical pharmacology and therapeutics (the focus of our sister ACCP journal Pharmacotherapy), nor pharmacy based in a specific practice site, nor general pharmacy education. Others were not so sure, but I think over the past 7 years we were proven right. JACCP is a journal for clinical pharmacists and by clinical pharmacists. I view our content as a three-legged stool: clinical pharmacy practice, clinical education, and heath policy affecting clinical pharmacists. I feel we have made an impact to help and support clinical pharmacists with our content—one of our main goals. Since 2018, we have published 64 issues, including 9 themed issues with just over 1000 total articles. We received over 400 submissions this year with an acceptance rate of 32%. A new journal, like any large project, requires the help of many. The leadership of ACCP and Pharmacotherapy Publications Inc. has been incredibly supportive at every step. A special thanks to Keri Sims, Director of Journal Operations. I was blessed to have five extremely capable Associate Editors and a particularly dedicated Editorial Board. Pharmacotherapy is quite fortunate to have a gifted editor in Lindsey DeVane; we worked closely together, and I could always rely on his support and advice. Of course, without authors and clinical pharmacy scholars to submit papers, there would be no JACCP. Many and perhaps most of our authors are practicing clinical pharmacists who squeeze in scholarship and research between their practice, taking clerkship students and service on college and/or health system committees—writing in the evening after the kids are in bed—I know I have been there. Please keep sending us your hard work. But there is more work to do. Our aim is to clearly be the premier journal for clinical pharmacy practice and education scholarship—this is in a competitive landscape with the business model of biomedical publishing changing and under pressure. We want to publish impactful papers that position clinical pharmacists as vital and necessary members of the health care team. These next steps will be taken by the next Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Stuart Haines. JACCP is in capable hands to be sure. Stuart is an accomplished scholar with extensive national and international recognition for his research and service to the profession. He is an experienced journal editor, both for JACCP and a number of other publications, including serving as a Scientific Editor of Pharmacotherapy. Stuart has been with me from the inception of JACCP as the Senior Associate Editor soliciting invited papers and coordinating the Research and Scholarly Methods section. I know Stuart will continue the upward trajectory of JACCP, making even more improvements. Please give Stuart all the support you have given me for the past 7 years. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the ACCP membership and clinical pharmacists everywhere as the founding Editor-in-Chief of JACCP. The author declares no conflicts of interest.
