Analysis of Pitching Patterns with Regard to the Pitch Type and Zone to be Thrown Next

Using data published in Major League Baseball Savant, we categorized the pitch types of right-handed starting pitchers who throw overthrows and three-quarter throws. For the currently thrown pitches, the next pitch type and zone were added as new variables to visualize what pitches are thrown and in what zone. This research aimed to capture trends in pitching patterns for each cluster of baseball games by visualizing them using a web application based on R-Shiny.

Abstract

Using data published in Major League Baseball Savant, we categorized the pitch types of right-handed starting pitchers who throw overthrows and three-quarter throws. For the currently thrown pitches, the next pitch type and zone were added as new variables to visualize what pitches are thrown and in what zone. This research aimed to capture trends in pitching patterns for each cluster of baseball games by visualizing them using a web application based on R-Shiny.
