Community involvement in the development of nagari-based sustainable waste management

Abstract Effective and sustainable waste management is a significant challenge for many communities, especially in Nagari (Village), which has local wisdom and a solid social structure. This research aims to analyze community involvement in the development of Nagari-based sustainable waste management, focusing on the active participation of the community in every stage of waste management, from collection sorting to final processing. The research method used is qualitative, with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The research was conducted in Nagari Sikabau, Dharmasraya Regency, West Sumatra Province, Indonesia. The results show that community involvement in Nagari-based sustainable waste management improves waste management efficiency and strengthens social and cultural relations between residents. Community participation in waste management education and training programs and the formation of Nagari-based working groups proved effective in creating behavioral changes and environmental awareness. In addition, support from the local government (Nagari) and synergy between various stakeholders (universities) are determining factors for the success of this program. This research concludes that Nagari-based sustainable waste management can be a practical and applicable model in other areas with similar characteristics.
