The Impact of Diabetes On Sexual Health: Pathophysiology, Psychosocial Factors, And Management Strategies
Diabetes mellitus, a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by persistent hyperglycemia, is a global health challenge with profound implications for physical and mental well-being. Among its complications, sexual dysfunction is a highly prevalent but often underrecognized issue that significantly affects the quality of life in both men and women. The impact of diabetes on sexual health is multifactorial, stemming from both physiological and psychosocial factors. Physiological mechanisms include vascular damage, neuropathy, and hormonal imbalances, which collectively impair blood flow, nerve function, and hormonal regulation essential for sexual performance. Psychosocial factors, such as depression, anxiety, stress, and body image concerns, further exacerbate sexual dysfunction, creating a vicious cycle that affects emotional well-being and intimate relationships. Despite its high prevalence, sexual dysfunction remains underreported in clinical settings due to stigma, embarrassment, and a lack of awareness among patients and providers. This review examines the complex interplay between diabetes and sexual dysfunction, exploring the pathophysiological mechanisms, psychosocial contributors, and their combined impact on individuals. It highlights the importance of early diagnosis and intervention, emphasizing the role of routine screening and patient education in breaking the silence surrounding this issue. A multidisciplinary management approach is crucial for effective care, involving endocrinologists, urologists, gynecologists, mental health professionals, and dietitians to address the diverse needs of patients. By adopting holistic, patient-centered strategies and fostering open communication, healthcare providers can improve sexual health and overall well-being, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for individuals living with diabetes.
