Abstract: The author narrates the moments following the announcement of her paternal grandmother’s death. This death unfolds into memories of the grandmother’s perceived coldness and isolation from others. The author notes how the grandmother wasn’t like most grandmothers. However, a sleepover at an aunt’s house brings new revelations and insight into who the grandmother had been, who she had wrapped up inside of herself. The grandmother’s past lives how the enduring threads of love and what happens when it is cut. Her cold disposition becomes a symbol of the ability to love deeply and root oneself in the depths of love. In the grandmother’s story, the author finds how a crucial moment in Palestine’s history upends and re-constructs the grandmother’s future.
