Critical Role of Public Relations and Organizational Change in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): A Case of Architectural, Engineering, and Construction Industry

Purpose: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) serve as a global blueprint for addressing complex environmental, social, and economic challenges. While these goals apply across industries, their integration within the Architectural, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) sector is crucial given the industry's substantial environmental impact, resource consumption, and influence on urban and community development. This study explores the critical roles of public relations (PR) and organizational change in facilitating the AEC sector’s alignment with the SDGs. Effective acceptance of organizational change has become crucial for architectural, engineering, and construction (AEC) organizations to maintain a competitive edge in the current dynamic market. Organizations with superior skills in managing organizational change can establish themselves as pioneers and require fewer resources to navigate the transformation. Methodology: This qualitative study focused on PR practitioners employed by Saudi Telecommunications Company as the primary analysis subjects. Data were collected from STC branch-affiliated public relations directors and practitioners via in-depth semi-structured interviews. Results and Discussion: The findings revealed seven distinct outcomes of PR practice. This study generated results that coincided with the literature on PR strategies. These findings described the consequences (crisis management, productivity, connection building, employee engagement, and establishing a healthy environment) arising from PR initiatives to foster and advance organizational transformation. Research Implication: This study integrated the relationship management theory and Lewin’s change management theory. Thus, the findings presented significant potential for advancing understanding of how businesses can proficiently navigate change processes while fostering favorable stakeholder connections. Originality/value: This study developed a framework to address employee resistance to organizational changes effectively.
