Retrospective Study of Generational Cohorts to Diagnose Terminal Efficiency in Industrial Engineering Students

Currently, enrollment in the Industrial Engineering degree at the Tecnologico Nacional de Mexico / Instituto Tecnologico de Apizaco has increased. However, in each generation, there continues to be a gap between the number of students who enter compared to the number of students who manage to obtain their degree. The study and monitoring of the terminal efficiency in each generation constitutes a very valuable source of information that, when systematized, is capable of strengthening educational planning in the search to improve the quality and relevance of educational services, thereby achieving a more inclusive higher education. The objective of this study is to identify the behavior of the academic performance of the generational cohorts of 2015-2020, 2016-2021, 2017-2022, 2018-2023 in terms of dropout, graduation, obtention of a degree, and gender. For the analysis of these behaviors, a retrospective, quantitative, descriptive approach was used, individually in the existing records (Kardex) of each generation, provided by the Department of School Services. Subsequently, the object of study is examined, characterizing the students for each generational cohort based on the parameters already mentioned. The study of a group of students by generational cohort allows to diagnose their academic progress. The results obtained in the Parameter Without Degrees indicate that a large proportion of students fail to graduate. In the Graduates Parameter, the values obtained show that the terminal efficiency of the students is relatively low. There is a high level of dropout in some generational cohorts. This is probably an area of concern and intervention to remedy the problem.
