The Reunion as a Catalyst for Divorce: A Case Study of the Padang Religious Court, Indonesia

The reunion problem is one of the causes of the spike in divorce rates in Padang City due to indications of infidelity during this activity. So, this research fills the gap in research regarding divorce with reunion cases, which can lead to divorce in the jurisdiction of the Class 1A Religious Court in Padang City. The aim of this study is to identify and analyze the effect of Islamic law on divorce cases triggered by reunions at the Religious Court of Padang Class 1A. A descriptive qualitative approach is employed to collect empirical data from field cases. Key findings reveal that reunions often act as a catalyst that accelerates relationship breakdowns, mainly when prior issues exist. Communication between ex-spouses during hearings shows high emotional tension, with judges and advocates playing crucial roles in maintaining a professional atmosphere. Mediation only sometimes succeeds due to the distrust arising from reunions. However, the application of Islamic legal principles, such as the elimination of harm, provides justice for both parties while striving to preserve marriage when possible. This study implies the need to consider reunions as a significant triggering factor in divorce within the context of Islamic law.
