Insurgent moves ease pressure on Myanmar’s junta
Significance In early December, the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) declared a unilateral ceasefire with the junta and expressed willingness to participate in Chinese-mediated peace negotiations. The TNLA, MNDAA and Arakan Army (AA) together form the Three Brotherhood Alliance (TBA). Impacts The junta will use the limited respite to redirect troops from areas where they have been fighting the TBA to other conflict hotspots. China will look to resume progress on some of its conflict-affected infrastructure projects in Myanmar. Russia and India, as well as China, will remain important players in the Myanmar crisis.
