Long-term outcomes of ganglionated plexus ablation as sole therapy for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation

The autonomic nervous system, through the ganglionated plexus (GP), is known to contribute to the arrhythmogenesis of atrial fibrillation (AF). The GANGLIA-AF trial was a prospective, multicenter, randomized, single-blinded study (NCT02487654) randomizing paroxysmal AF patients to either stand-alone left atrial ectopy-triggering GP (ET-GP) ablation or standard pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) only.1 The trial was unique in that it performed detailed mapping of the left atrium, surveying for sites that triggered atrial ectopy or AF by high-frequency, high-output stimulation within the local atrial refractory period.
