Development of a Prototype for the Prevention of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Based on EMG Signals

This paper presents the development of a project for the prevention of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), a common peripheral neuropathy in people exposed to repetitive hand movements. A prototype is proposed that detects repetitive movements in the wrist muscles, offering a non-invasive alternative to avoid surgical interventions and preserve work functionality. The methodology combines engineering principles with Design Thinking tools, facilitating an iterative and coordinated approach at all stages of the project. The results show the signals obtained from the design and implementation of the EMG signal acquisition system and the tests performed on different wrist muscles. Finally, it concludes with the achievements of the project and discusses the importance of the structured methodology in the development of the prototype, while identifying opportunities for improvement, such as the integration of the systems into a wearable bracelet, and discussing possible future work, such as the development of a native alarm system through an application.
