Binational Universities: Platforms for Cross-Border Academic and Economic Development

Binational universities are a form of transnational education formed through bilateral agreements between governments, combining the educational systems of two countries.Unlike international branch campuses, they are entirely new institutions aimed at promoting cross-border collaboration, academic innovation, research, and economic development.Despite challenges related to governance and funding, binational universities are a promising model for fostering international cooperation and addressing global issues through collaborative efforts.inational universities (BUs) are emerging as a new form of cross-border academic, economic, and political collaboration. However, these institutions have received very little scholarly attention.Unlike international branch campuses (IBCs), which extend existing institutions into new locations, BUs are entirely new universities born from bilateral government agreements that seek to merge academic cultures. They also serve as a source of economic innovation and workforce development across partnering nations.
