Redefining Work in the Age of AI: Challenges and Pathways to Opportunities
A revolution caused by Artificial Intelligence has dramatically led to a transformational overhaul in the world of work, forcing us to rethink old paradigms on employment. The working paper aims to capture various aspects of AI and its impact on labor structure, obstacles in its path to full maturity, and pathways for new possibilities. Drawing into neoclassical economics, labour studies, and digital technology literature, this article surveys the state of knowledge on how AI fits within work and employment in an all-encompassing analysis of the relationship between these two fields. The coming of artificial intelligence brings danger and promise in restructuring the future of work. AI development promises substantial disruption in traditional employment patterns and occupational distribution. AI threatens to increase economic inequality and social dislocation, where the traditional careers disappear because human labor is more than thoroughly displaced in almost all sectors and industries. However, that is between the shadows of challenge and promise. Appropriately guided AI can create new types of work suited to the new skill requirements. Shining a light on these dynamics helps policymakers design interventions that can counter the adverse impacts on more vulnerable populations. Locking AI is a strategy unto itself; just as a deep analysis into the root cause and impact of labor market disruption can open the way to maximizing benefit from technology while reducing harm. Proper management of the changes to society brought by AI will allow humans to create a future in which prosperity can be more equitably distributed. This brings out the necessity of proactive measures to be taken through policies aimed at creating a conducive environment for fair integration of AI technologies at work. Some of the education and reskilling programs, as well as labor market regulations, and strategies on inclusive economic growth are of importance. A culture that promotes lifelong learning and adaptability with an evolving economy driven by an AI-concept is also of concern.
