A Direct Assessment ‘Style’ Methodology for Evaluating Type B Sleeves
Abstract Pressure containing (Type B) full encirclement steel repair sleeves are a widely used and versatile repair method for defects in oil and gas pipelines. With proper design, materials, installation, and maintenance, these repairs can operate safely and reliably over the life of the pipeline. However, like any other repair technique, if installed improperly, problems can arise over time. The objective of this paper is to describe a direct assessment ‘style’ process that could be used to evaluate previously installed Type B repair sleeves within a pipeline system for quality and long-term reliability. This process includes a potential prioritization method, as well as techniques for in-situ examination of sleeves excavated through targeted or opportunistic digs, and destructive examination of sleeves removed from service.
