Co-production of xylooligosaccharides and glucose by multiple-joint enzymes treatment based on maleic acid pretreated sugarcane bagasse

In this study, the combination method of acidic pre-hydrolysis and endo-xylanase hydrolysis was proven to efficiently produce xylooligosaccharides (XOS) from sugarcane bagasse (SCB). The maximum yield of XOS from SCB was achieved 60.5 % by a combination of acidic hydrolysis (0.26 % maleic acid (MA) concentration, temperature 147.5 °C, and duration 40 min) and additional endo-xylanase hydrolysis. Meanwhile, the proportion of the predominant active constituents (xylobiose and xylotriose) significantly increased over 80.0 %. In addition, the efficient enzymatic saccharification of pretreated materials is a key step in achieving economics of lignocellulosic biorefinery, however, the remaining solids from XOS preparation cannot be directly achieved a satisficing cellulose saccharification efficiency (<80.0 %) with cellulase. Therefore, in order to enhance the saccharification efficiency, ferulic acid esterase, which could break the bonds of lignin-carbohydrate complex, was co-loaded with cellulase. As a result, the cellulose saccharification efficiency was improved to 91.5 %. Overall, favorable outcomes suggested that the multiple-joint enzymes treatment based on maleic acid pretreated SCB was a green and cost-effective method for sugar products (XOS and glucose) preparation. • Cooperation of acidic and xylanase hydrolysis can achieve higher XOS yield. • The maximum XOS yield was 59.5 % and the main components were X2 and X3. • The XOS and glucose can be efficiently produced by multiple-enzymes assistance.
