Implementation of the Image Processing Technique Using FPGA

This paper presents implementations of the image processing technique using a field programmable gate array (FPGA). In general, FPGA-based implementations of image processing algorithms provides high-performance processing and real-time operation for large amounts of data. We herein present detailed experimental analysis of the implemented techniques based on their processing time, accuracy, power consumption, and resource utilization. The experimental setup involves a Xilinx PYNQ Z2 FPGA board and a 512×512 grayscale input image. The highest PFoM obtained by the developed algorithm was 0.8655, which is quite significant compared with existing traditional edge detection algorithms. Moreover, the proposed method only utilizes 3,229 slices, which is the least number of slices used so far in comparison with previous works.
