Brenner northern access route – tunnel design based on building information modeling
A new gateway to the south: Germany, Austria and Italy are working on a transformational transport project in the Alps. The new Brenner Axis between Munich and Verona is essential for more climate-friendly freight and passenger transport on one of Europe's main transport corridors. The Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) is the largest rail infrastructure innovation for 150 years, creating a continuous, almost horizontal rail connection between Munich and Verona to ease congestion on the Brenner Pass. However, modern access routes are needed if the Base Tunnel is to realise its full potential. The Munich-Rosenheim-Kufstein-Innsbruck railway line is part of the northern Brenner access route. The new line between Radfeld and Baumkirchen in the Lower Inn Valley in Tyrol has been in operation since 2012.The sections between Munich and Radfeld are currently in the planning phase.Six tunnels with a total length of around 53.5 km will be constructed on the new 90 km long line between Grafing and Radfeld.
