A construction site with enormous performance density – A10 Tauernautobahn, maintancen of the Tunnels Ofenauer and Hiefler and the Tunnels Werfen

The general refurbishment of the five tunnel systems on the A 10 Tauern Motorway (Ofenauer, Hiefler, Brentenberg, Zetzenberg, Helbersberg) is a current construction project that, due to its complexity, scope, and impact on individual traffic, has several unique features and is also of great public interest.Preparations for the project began in 2019 with preliminary investigations, and several implementation options were examined. The specific conditions of the A 10, characterized by daily commuter traffic and seasonal holiday traffic, imposed a tight construction schedule. The scope of the construction measures and the complete renewal of the electrical operating and safety technology showed that the resulting performance density exceeded the limits of feasibility. Before the construction tender was published, the concept was fundamentally revised, and a multi-phase execution was planned.
