Chinese piano art during the Cultural Revolution: A history of study in Russia

The research aims to elucidate the historical trajectory of Russian scholarly understanding of the development of Chinese piano art during the Cultural Revolution. This work is the first of its kind, thus establishing its novelty. It is noted that over several decades of studying this process, Russian musicology has made significant progress. However, it is argued that this study did not encompass all the important events of the Cultural Revolution, and that Chinese composers’ oeuvre from that period remains only fragmentarily investigated. The necessity of a more in-depth analysis of the underlying causes of the catastrophic state of piano art in the People’s Republic of China is asserted. The research resulted in the identification of avenues for further scholarly inquiry in this field.

Abstract

This work is the first of its kind, thus establishing its novelty. It is noted that over several decades of studying this process, Russian musicology has made significant progress. However, it is argued that this study did not encompass all the important events of the Cultural Revolution, and that Chinese composers’ oeuvre from that period remains only fragmentarily investigated. The necessity of a more in-depth analysis of the underlying causes of the catastrophic state of piano art in the People’s Republic of China is asserted.
