Snusbruk og holdninger til snusbruk blant tannlegestudenter og tannpleierstudenter ved Universitetet i Bergen
English summary Snus use and attitudes towards snus use among dental students and dental hygienist students at the University of Bergen Nor Tannlegeforen Tid. 2024; 134: 1040-9. A survey was conducted in the spring of 2023 among dental students and dental hygienist students at the Department of Clinical Dentistry (IKO), Faculty of Medicine, University of Bergen, for the purpose of mapping the student’s snus habits, knowledge and attitudes towards snus, and to examine preventive work at IKO. Of 343 students, 285 (83.1%) responded to the survey, of which 60 (21.1%) used snus occasionally, while 30 (10.5%) used snus daily. Only 45 (21.9%) of the 205 students who had started with patient care always asked the patients about snus habits, while 70 (34.1%) asked when they remembered it. The students less often asked the patients about snus habits than about smoking habits. The most common reason for this was forgetfulness (n = 113; 55.1%). Knowledge about snus increased as the students received more instruction on the topic. Nevertheless, nine out of ten students wanted more teaching about snus and snus use. Snus use was as widespread among dental students and dental hygienist students at IKO as among their peers in Norway, approximately 31% used snus occasionally or daily. The teaching on the course influenced the students’ own snus habits to a small extent, but they had a more negative attitude towards snus use after starting the course. This study indicates a need for better routines within the tobacco prevention work at IKO.
