Single Atom Engineered Antibiotics Overcome Bacterial Resistance (Adv. Mater. 50/2024)

Multi-Drug Resistance Single atoms of manganese, tightly bonded to carboxylated nitrogen-doped graphene, exhibit potent antibacterial properties against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Targeting the biomolecules of the outer bacterial membrane, the new “single-atom” engineered antibiotic effectively bypasses the development of bacterial resistance and heals infected wounds in vivo, while remaining non-toxic to human cells. More details can be found in article number 2410652 by Aristides Bakandritsos, Radek Zbořil, and co-workers.
