Automatizing step-climbing feature in a wheelchair via digitized movement control for value-sensitive market
This article presents a cost-efficient automation of a step-climbing mechatronic mechanism of a wheelchair, enabling spatial movement in vertical and horizontal directions to address accessibility and independence issues for people with mobility limitations [1]. The study delves into extant technologies to work on an innovative mechanism that employs auto-controlling measures for step-climbing wheelchairs at an affordable cost for the value-sensitive market. The design entails creating an optimum, flexible system using an electric actuator attached to a fork-bracket to hold the wheels, sonar sensors for elevation, and IR sensors for obstacle detection, which are interfaced with a microcontroller, as safety and convenience are paramount in assistive technology-based devices [5]. The design simulation results show that the control mechanism is able to successfully perform the climbing operation, which in real-world situations could be from the road to the pavement, validated with hardware modeling. The wheelset movement is guided using an automated control module to sense the height for implementing the step-climbing process, as is the requirement for accessible, low-cost technology development for those with limited mobility, promoting increased self-sufficiency and social integration [2]. The design precept would inspire the assistive technology industry and users alike, creating a potent market opportunity.
