Towards objective lifecycle validation of automotive cameras
Automotive cameras are an integral component for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Autonomous Vehicles (AV). In order to be effective, driver assistance systems must operate in all scenarios and withstand harsh environmental conditions. This research examines Tier 1 environmental testing of cameras, addressing the need for enhanced validation tools for the extended use times and increased operational demands of autonomous vehicles. A multi-functional test target and image quality tools are proposed to detect errors earlier in lifecycle validation, otherwise known as the vehicle mission profile. Two objective test charts are provided to improve upon subjective methods used by the current state of the art to increase the robustness and repeatability of lifecycle validation. Additionally, computer-aided tools are provided to monitor key performance indicators. Systematic evaluation of image quality metrics allow reliability engineers to characterize sensor aging for the entire lifecycle of the vehicle. The proposed methodology can be used to identify issues earlier, aiding in cost-effective product design and enhancing the reliability of automotive camera systems.
